Portable pool vacuums are available in manual and automatic models. Manual versions are much cheaper than automatic ones. The vacuum cleaner you need will be determined by the type of your pool. In 1951, Ferdinand Chauvier, a hydraulics engineer, invented the first swimming pool vacuum from his home in South Africa. He developed it originally just for his own pool. This prototype was operated manually.

Many cleaning methods are completely automatic these days using micro-chip computing on-board to navigate around the pool, and need no supervision apart from manually removing the dirt on a regular basis from the robot's bag.
